Innovative Approach to Understanding Language Policy Development

Dr Elin Royles and Dr Huw Lewis

Dr. Elin Royles and Dr. Huw Lewis have developed a framework to analyse the factors that influence the development of language policies.

In their contribution to The Routledge Handbook of Language Policy and Planning, they engage with two public policy approaches, multi-level governance and new institutionalism. Their chapter Governance, complexity and multi-level LPP develops a multi-level institutional framework to systematically analyse the factors influencing the development of particular language policies.

The chapter goes on to explain how the framework can explain recent policies regarding European regional or minority languages and it’s potential to analyse other language policies, like learning foreign languages or helping immigrants with language integration.

The Routledge Handbook of Language Policy and Planning is a comprehensive and authoritative survey, including original contributions from leading senior scholars and rising stars to provide a basis for future research in language policy and planning in international, national, regional, and local contexts.
