This project explores how people in Wales, Scotland and Catalonia think about independence.

Whilst most studies draw on survey data to examine why people support or oppose independence, we take a different approach. Using a visual methodology like photography, followed by focus groups and interviews with the photographers, allows us to probe more deeply into the different factors and experiences that shape the way individuals approach this topic.

It allows us to go beyond thinking about citizens’ views of independence as a simple dichotomy (support vs opposition), to better understand the nuanced ways in which individuals make sense of far-reaching constitutional change.

We are exhibiting a selection of the photography during 2024, ‘Head/Heart: Framing the Future – Photography from Wales, Scotland and Catalonia’.

We piloted this methodology with Aberystwyth Camera Club, and exhibited the photos in Aberystwyth in 2023. More information here.
