Framing The Future

Exhibition at Workers Gallery, Ynyshir, 7-23 March 2024

10.30am-4.30pm Thursday – Saturday

This is an exhibition of photography from our project that uses photography to understand how people think about independence in Wales, Scotland and Catalonia. It therefore contributes to understanding how visual methods can be utilised to promote discussion among citizens about constitutional issues.

This project differs to work that has focused on how people’s characteristics (such as age, gender and class), their attitudes and political preferences have affected their views about independence.

This project takes a different approach by exploring people’s thoughts and feelings about independence. And how their experiences shape their views.

We have worked with photography clubs and students to explore this question. Participants were asked to take images about independence. They discussed the images and take part in interviews.

The exhibition included work from photographers associated with the following organisations: Aberystwyth Camera Club; Workers Gallery, Ynyshir, y Rhondda; Foto-Cine Mataró d’UEC (Mataró Camera Club); IEFC: Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (Catalonia Institute of Photographic Studies), and photographers from the Caernarfon area.

The project is non-partisan and does not promote a particular position on independence. It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, as part of the ESRC/WISERD Civil Society Research Centre.
