Raymond Williams is known as a theorist of culture, with his work drawing on his settled upbringing in Monmouthshire. Hannah Arendt escaped Nazi Germany, to France and on to  New York where she became known as a key thinker on totalitarianism, statelessness and the fate of refugees. This event will discuss the ways in which civil society has responded to refugees and asylum seekers in different parts of Wales in the wake of the recent ‘refugee crisis’. The event is aimed at policy makers and those who work in the third sector. We will present current research on refugees in Wales and share new research carried out with refugee-supporting organisations in Aberystwyth, Cardiff, and Swansea. Workshop on Visual, Creative and Participatory Methodologies in the Social Sciences with Dr. Dawn Mannay, Cardiff University

The workshop aims to introduce WISERD-affiliated researchers and PhD students to visual, creative and participatory methodologies in the social sciences. Whilst such techniques are well established in some areas of the social sciences (e.g. sociology), they are less well used in other areas.
