Collaborative Studentship (fixed project): ‘Tackling policy challenges that others cannot reach: sub-state governments, policy integration and policy mainstreaming’

The studentship will critically engage with approaches to policy integration and policy mainstreaming across a range of public policy fields, including gender equality, environmental sustainability, and linguistic sustainability. It aims to develop a comparative analysis of efforts by sub-state governments to engage in policy integration by examining the approaches of devolved administrations in the UK and also through a selective examination of what are considered as effective policy integration initiatives in a broader European context.

The studentship will prioritise knowledge exchange, and will involve collaboration with officials from the Welsh Government and the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. This will include the joint organisation of two workshops where findings arising from the project will be presented.

Welsh Language skills are desirable but not essential for this studentship.

Collaborative studentships involve liaison with a non-academic organisation, often at many key stages of the research programme. This studentship is offered on either a 1+3 or +3 basis and will commence in October 2018.

The aim of the studentship is to develop a comparative analysis of efforts by sub-state governments to engage in policy integration by examining the approaches of devolved administrations in the UK and also through a selective examination of what are considered as effective policy integration initiatives in a broader European context. Consequently, it will critically engage with approaches to policy integration and policy mainstreaming in public policy, and it could focus on areas such as gender equality, environmental sustainability, and linguistic sustainability.

Knowledge exchange is important to the studentship, and it will provide opportunities to collaborate with officials from the Welsh Government and the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. This will include the joint organisation of two workshops where findings arising from the project will be presented. We are grateful for their willingness to support this project.
